History

Neville was born to Alice and Frank Longbottom on July 30, 1980. His parents eventually became prominent aurors. When Neville was a young boy, the Lestranges and Barty Crouch Jr. tortured his parents to find out Voldemort's whereabouts - they used the Cruciatus Curse so many times that Frank and Alice were tortured into insanity. Poor Neville was left to be raised by his Gran, Augusta, and his grandfather. A few years later, his grandfather died unexpectedly of a heart attack while Neville was in the room. Having witnessed death, Neville was given the ability to see thestrals.

Neville's Gran is quite the intimidating character, and definitely shaped his early childhood personality. She can come across as overbearing and controlling, which is how Neville viewed her until his mid-teens, but she cares for the ones she loves, and sometimes shows them affection.

When Neville was a boy, he was so shy and reserved (a combination of having witnessed his parents' torture, his grandfather's death, and his grandmother's controlling behavior), that his family was convinced that he was a squib. However, when his Great-Uncle Algie dangled him over a window to "try and scare the magic out of him," Algie accidentally dropped him, and Neville started bouncing upon hitting the floor, demonstrating magical ability for the first time in his life.

Neville entered Hogwarts a month after his eleventh birthday, not knowing the dangers he was to face in the coming years. He was sorted into Gryffindor, almost to the surprise of the entire room. However, he consistently demonstrated his courage and time and again proved his worth as a Gryffindor, starting in his first year when he stood up to the trio, telling them not to roam the hallways at night again so the house would not lose any more points.

During his fifth year, Neville was devoted to the DA, an organization he felt pertinent to his education - he was sure that Harry would help them learn defensive spells that could defeat Death Eaters, and eventually, Voldemort. This desire for learning vastly increased when he learned that his parents' torturers had escaped from Azkaban. Eventually, he was one of only three DA members to go to the Ministry of Magic with the trio to help fight the death eaters that Harry thought were holding Sirius hostage. He hoped for DA meetings to resume during his sixth year, but much to his dismay, Harry decided against it. However, when they needed his help to fight off the Death Eaters that had managed into Hogwarts, Neville once again responded to the call. He was always one of the few left standing, and showed a surprising amount of skill for a boy whose family once thought he was a squib.

Neville's seventh year was one that truly defined who he is today. Death Eaters had fully infiltrated Hogwarts, and Neville knew that without Harry, Ron and Hermione, he would have to do something to rally other students in a resistance force. Along with Ginny and Luna, they attempted to steal the sword of Godric Gryffindor from Snape's office, but Snape caught them as they were leaving and sent them to Hagrid as punishment (Snape was actually quite proud of them for their efforts, but had to look like he was punishing them in order to keep his cover). He and Luna constantly spread the word of Dumbledore's Army, hoping to recruit even more than had originally joined during his fifth year. Neville remembered that whenever Harry stood up to a teacher, it gave others hope, so he was determined to stand up for himself and against the awful lessons and punishments the students had to endure. Eventually, after Luna and Ginny's disappearances, Neville was the only one in charge, and the Carrows knew that he was actually a threat, so they sent someone to target Augusta Longbottom (his Gran). Little did they know how powerful of a witch she truly was. Finally, after years of living in his parents' shadow, Augusta was truly proud of her grandson and everything he was trying to do in order to overthrow the death eaters at Hogwarts.

Neville had to go into hiding after they targeted his grandmother, refusing to subdue the riots he was planning. He took refuge in the room of requirement, which he eventually learned how to truly manipulate. When other students started seeking refuge, too, the room of requirement started sprouting hammocks for them, and when girls arrived, a clean shower appeared. The room was even able to create a passageway to the Hog's Head, where Aberforth Dumbledore served the refugees warm food and drink. As long as one of the army stayed in the Room, they were safe from being discovered.

The Second Battle of Hogwarts was quite important for Neville's character. He was able to rally most of the current of-age student body at Hogwarts, and all of the DA alums, to fight against the death eaters. Even Neville's Gran showed up for the battle, quite proud of her grandson, and went to fight alongside him. Harry, on his way to face Voldemort for what he thought was the last time, ran into Neville and made him promise that he would help slay Nagini, not really explaining why he had to do this. Neville stuck to his word, and during the final moments of the battle, stood up to Voldemort himself. Voldemort placed the Sorting Hat upon Neville's head, and when Neville refused to join the Death Eaters, Voldemort set both the Hat and Neville on fire. However, during the chaos that soon erupted, Neville was able to break free and pulled the sword of Gryffindor out of the hat, proving that he was indeed a true Gryffindor, and beheaded the snake, destroying the last Horcrux other than Voldemort himself.

After graduation, he worked as an herbologist and as a substitute teacher for Professor Sprout. Neville married Hannah Abbott when he was 26, and received his teaching post two years later. Their marriage was tumultuous, and ultimately ended in divorce six months ago when Hannah cheated on Neville since he was only around for a few months a year and wasn't willing to make it work.

Personality

Although he started Hogwarts as a timid, friendless boy, Neville completely changed over his seven years at the school. He proved himself brave when he was able to pull the sword of Gryffindor out of the sorting hat (after all, only someone extremely brave or extremely stupid would stand up to Voldemort himself). Constantly surprising himself and his family, he continually surpasses his own expectations of himself. As an adult, he's much different than the eleven year old whose family thought he was a squib, but he's still timid in a lot of social situations.
